How to Lower Fuel Costs as an Owner Operator

Fuel is almost always the largest single operating expense for an owner-operator. It's also one of the few costs you can meaningfully reduce through daily decisions — unlike insurance premiums or truck payments, which are largely fixed once you've signed on the line.

Here's a practical breakdown of every lever you have, from the highest impact to the incremental gains worth knowing about.

Fuel Cards: The First Move

A fuel card from a major trucking network (USSF, Comdata, EFS, Fleet One, and others) typically offers per-gallon discounts at participating truck stops compared to the posted pump price. The discount varies by network, card type, and whether you meet minimum volume requirements.

For a truck running 10,000 miles per month at roughly 6 MPG, that's about 1,667 gallons per month. A consistent discount of just $0.10/gallon is around $2,000 per year. Larger discounts are available depending on the card and how much you run.

When evaluating a fuel card:

  • Compare the actual discount at the truck stops on your lanes, not the best-case rate in the marketing materials
  • Check for transaction fees, monthly fees, or minimum purchase requirements that eat into the savings
  • Confirm the network has solid coverage on your typical routes

IFTA-Aware Fuel Purchases

IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) means you pay fuel taxes to each state based on miles driven there, not based on where you bought the fuel. The fuel taxes you paid at the pump become credits against your IFTA quarterly liability.

The result: buying fuel in a state with a lower fuel tax rate, then driving miles in a higher-tax state, puts the IFTA calculation in your favor — the credit from low-tax purchases offsets liability in higher-tax states. This is how the system is designed, not a loophole.

It only benefits you if you're paying attention. Checking IFTA figures regularly helps you understand where your fuel tax position stands across your usual lanes.

Don't go far out of your way to chase lower-tax fuel — a significant detour rarely pencils out when you factor in time and extra miles. But when two stops are roughly equivalent in location and convenience, the fuel tax rate is worth factoring in.

Where You Fill Up Within Your Route

Diesel prices can vary significantly within a short stretch of highway. Apps and aggregator sites show posted diesel prices at upcoming stops on your route, letting you plan fill-ups before you get there.

A few practical habits:

  • Don't fill up at the first available stop after entering a high-price region — the next stop 30–50 miles ahead may be meaningfully cheaper
  • Avoid running the tank low enough that you're forced to stop wherever is available
  • Large truck stop chains often have consistent pricing within their network; independent stops are more variable

This costs nothing and only requires a few minutes of planning before you roll.

Speed and Fuel Economy

Aerodynamic drag increases significantly with speed. Driving at 65 mph versus 75 mph makes a real difference in diesel consumption — fleet data and independent studies consistently show fuel economy improvements when cruise speeds come down. The exact improvement varies by truck, aerodynamic configuration, and load weight, but the relationship is consistent: faster speed burns more fuel.

The tradeoff is delivery time. If you're running tight windows or time-sensitive freight, a lower cruise speed may not be realistic. On flexible lanes without hard delivery pressure, however, the fuel math favors a slower pace.

Cruise control also helps — steady speeds are more efficient than accelerating and coasting repeatedly, especially on relatively flat terrain.

Idle Reduction

A diesel engine running at idle consumes fuel — commonly cited industry figures run around 0.8 gallons per hour for a Class 8 truck, though actual consumption varies by engine, load, and conditions (HVAC demand adds more). Running the engine to heat or cool the sleeper, keep the cab comfortable while waiting at a shipper, or simply because the engine is on adds up fast over a week of operation.

Options to reduce idle time:

Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) — a small diesel generator that powers sleeper HVAC and electrical systems independently of the main engine. Burns a fraction of what the main engine consumes at idle. APUs require a real upfront investment, but for operators who spend multiple nights per week in the sleeper, the fuel savings and reduced engine hours can justify the cost over time.

Truck stop electrification / shore power — some larger truck stops offer electrical hookups for the sleeper cab at an hourly rate. The cost is typically lower than idling for the same period, and you don't add engine hours.

Diesel-fired heaters — dedicated heating units that burn a small amount of diesel to heat the sleeper without running the main engine. Efficient for winter use; they don't cool, so a separate solution is needed in summer.

Idle reduction also has a secondary benefit: fewer engine hours means slower accumulation toward maintenance intervals. That's real money on PM costs over the life of the truck.

Tire Pressure and Rolling Resistance

Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, which forces the engine to work harder to maintain speed. Keeping tires at the correct inflation pressure is a zero-cost habit — the only tool required is a reliable pressure gauge and a few minutes per week. Many operators check tires on their pre-trip inspection; if you're not checking pressures regularly, start.

Tire selection also matters. Low-rolling-resistance (LRR) drive and trailer tires are measurably more fuel efficient than standard tires. The upfront cost is higher, but the efficiency difference shows up in fuel consumption over the life of the tire. If you're buying new tires, it's worth comparing LRR options at your tire dealer.

Automatic Tire Inflation Systems (ATIS) maintain correct pressure in trailer tires continuously and reduce blowout risk. They add complexity and cost, but high-mileage operators often find them worthwhile.

Fuel Surcharges: Make Sure You're Capturing Them

Fuel surcharges on your loads don't reduce your fuel cost — but they're supposed to offset it. If your rate confirmations aren't including a fuel surcharge on lanes where it's appropriate, you're absorbing higher fuel costs that should be factored into the rate.

When negotiating rates directly with shippers or reviewing broker contracts, confirm how fuel surcharges are structured. If you're seeing rates that don't account for current diesel prices, that's a rate conversation, not just a cost conversation.

Track Your Fuel Cost Per Mile

Most operators know that fuel is expensive. Fewer know their actual fuel cost per mile, or how it varies by lane, season, or truck. Without that number, it's hard to tell which of these strategies is actually working or how to factor fuel into rate decisions.
